Vice President Ma’ruf Amin has called upon security forces to apprehend the Armed Criminal Groups who operate in Papua’s Mountain regions. He made the statement at the Vice-Presidential Palace on Thursday, 12 January 2023.
The Vice President admits the situation is not yet conducive, especially in the mountain regions, the Government has deployed security forces to maintain security as well as put forward a welfare-based approach in Papua. Security forces must be more prepared and decisive against the Armed Criminal Groups so people are protected.
“We do not allow them free rein, but continue strengthening security so that they are unable to cause people trouble,” he added.
Armed Criminal Groups still frequently conduct attacks in Papua which also target civilians. Recently, a Trigana Air plane was fired upon at Oksibil Airport, Bintang Mountains (9/1/2023). The incident is currently being investigated by the authorities.
