Tolerance a Philosophy of Life for Papuans

In Papua, the spirit of inter-religious harmony has become a strong foundation for everyday life. Diversity in religion and traditional beliefs is a pillar in the culture of tolerance that colours people’s lives, creating harmony and peace.

According to Jan Cristhian Arebo, a Papuan youth leader, the role of youth in maintaining inter-religious harmony is very important. They, along with religious leaders, are often the driving forces in promoting dialogue, tolerance, and respect for differences of faith.

“Inter-religious harmony in Papua is not only a symbol of national unity, but also as a bridge that connects various religious groups,” said Arebo, Thursday (4/4)

One tangible manifestation of this tolerance is seen in the construction of places of worship, where religious people work hand in hand in building mosques and churches. This culture of tolerance is also reflected in the tradition of Bakar Batu (Stone Burning) from the Dani Tribe, which acts a means to reconcile disputes between groups.

According to the Nahdlatul Ulama Papua Regional Chairman Toni Wanggai, religious tradition in Papua is not merely a ritual, but has become a philosophy of life that upholds tolerance and harmony.

“Traditions such as ‘One furnace, three stones’ not only reflect daily life, but are also concrete evidence of Papua’s rich culture that blends customs and religion,” he said.

Anthropologist M Ikhsan Tanggok added that customs and religions in Papua are closely interrelated and complementary. The Papuan people are able to balance these two values, creating harmony that enhances the cultural and social panorama of Papua as a whole.

“Harmonization, tolerance and respect for diversity are integral parts of Papuan identity. This not only adds to Papua’s natural beauty, but also complements the fascinating cultural and social landscape,” he said.

It is hoped that the spirit of harmony felt during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr in Papua can be an example for the world, how a predominantly Christian region can appreciate minority groups in it. Papua continues to uphold its commitment to maintaining peace and strengthening its image as a harmonious and peaceful region for all.
