Advancing Energy Transition Through First Self-Reliant Energy School in Papua

As the largest energy company in Indonesia, Pertamina supports the government’s target in its energy transition program including the achievement of Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060. This commitment is manifested not only in the company’s business processes, but also through various Social and Environmental Responsibility activities. One of them is through the Self-reliant Energy Village Program which encourages the use of renewable energy in 85 villages in Indonesia.

The Self-reliant Energy Village program which received good feedback from the community was then developed specifically targeting the education sector leading to the initiative called the Self-reliant Energy School. The Self-reliant Energy School program has collaborated with several schools at the junior and senior high school levels throughout Indonesia to make an energy transition by using solar power plants as an energy source for learning and teaching activities. One of the schools appointed to host this program is State Senior High School 6 in Sorong Regency located in Wayankede Village, Seget District, Southwest Papua Province.

This school later became the first school in Papua to host the Self-reliant Energy School. This activity takes the form of various activities aimed at instilling care for the environmental and education on New and Renewable Energy.

The series of activities carried out include tree planting, an upcycling expo that showcases the work of students crafted from used materials, an Officer Class, and interactive talk shows with several speakers.

“Awareness of renewable energy does need to be instilled in the younger generation, so that our earth is maintained for the next generation,” said General Manager of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional RU VII Kasim, Yusuf Mansyur in his speech. This program is also a first step for SMA Negeri 6 Sorong Regency to start pioneering a Green School which is one of the programs launched by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

“We hope that this solar power plant installation can be a stepping stone for SMA Negeri 6 to be able to participate in the Green School Program. It is hoped that starting in 2024, schools will start pioneering environmentally friendly education programs accompanied by RU VII Kasim,” added Reno Fri Daryanto as Acting CSR Manager of PT Pertamina (Persero) who was present on this occasion. programs that have been launched by Pertamina in general and RU VII Kasim in particular.

“We are very grateful to Pertamina, specifically RU VII Kasim which has greatly assisted us in developing the community, especially related to children’s education in Seget District,” said Sorong Regency Human Resources Expert Staff Wa Ode Likewati. He hopes that this activity can provide encouragement and inspiration for children in his area to continue to protect the environment at school and at home.
