Wondama Bay Regency in West Papua is surrounded by conservation areas. Its sea is located in Cenderawasih Bay National Park, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. Its mountains are a highly protected nature reserve due to their biodiversity. For nature tourism enthusiasts, this regency is like an adventure paradise.
The Head of the Tourism and Culture Office of Wondama Bay Regency, Christian Mambor, said that Wondama Bay’s tourism is similar to Raja Ampat. “Like other island regencies, we are quite similar to Raja Ampat. But we are not as fortunate as Raja Ampat,” he said while attending the Wondama Bay Festival at Sarinah, Jakarta, on July 23, 2025.The reason is the limited access, which makes the journey to the location longer and more expensive.
For nature adventure enthusiasts, here are the tourist attractions in Wondama Bay.
1. Cenderawasih Bay National Park
Christian said that 80 percent of Cenderawasih bay National Park is located in Wondama Bay Regency. However, most people who visit this place depart from Nabire, Central Papua, due to easier access.
This national park, Christian said, offers the beauty of well-preserved coral reefs. In addition, there are also several rare marine animals such as dugongs, whale sharks, and manta rays.
The whale shark, which has long been known to be in Kwatisore, Nabire, is actually also in Wondama Bay. “Before entering Nabire, this whale shark was in this bay (Cenderawasih Bay),” said Christian.
2. Wondiboy Mountain Nature Reserve
Established as a nature reserve in 1992, the Wondiboy Mountains possess biodiversity, both in terms of flora and fauna, that must be preserved. The types of fauna found include three species of tree kangaroos, forest wallabies, spiny-tailed cuscuses, opossums, bandicoots, cats, double-wattled cassowaries, three species of rats, and several other rodents, six species of bats, and various insects. As for the types of plants, they include merbau and matoa.
3. The Sasi Culture
Wondama Bay also has a unique sasi tradition. According to Christian, this tradition involves limiting the exploitation of natural resources for one to three years for environmental recovery. After being closed, both marine and forest biodiversity will regrow and be ready for harvest.
4. Roon Festival
The Roon Festival, or Roon Island Festival, showcases the culture (local wisdom) of Wondama Bay combined with marine tourism potential. Held since 2018, this festival showcases the traditional sasi ritual, distinctive Roon carvings, as well as traditional music and dances.
This year, the Roon Bay Wondama Festival will be held in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of Papuan Civilization in October 2025.
