Vice President Visits Papua, Vows Development Acceleration

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin inaugurated the declaration of the construction of the South Papua Provincial Government Facilities and Infrastructure Center, in Merauke Regency, South Papua, Tuesday (4/6/2024). Ma’ruf Amin assessed that this development is a sign of the central government’s commitment and seriousness to develop South Papua Province.

“I am also here to see firsthand the development process and welfare of the Papuan people, especially in South Papua, and ensure that they are running well,” said Ma’ruf, Tuesday, as quoted from a press release. The Vice President also outlined strategic steps to the Provincial Government of South Papua to accelerate development in the region.’  

First, he instructed for the comprehensive programs and measures be imrpoved by highlighting the potential and uniqueness of the South Papua region located on the country’s borders. “The dream of the people of South Papua to build a big home as a place of shelter has been realized today. However, there is still a big responsibility in front of us, which is to make this new home glow with the light of welfare, peace, and justice in Eastern Indonesia,” said the Vice President.

Second, Ma’ruf instructed that the South Papua central government area should not only be a physical support for government functions, but also a driving axis for the acceleration of the province’s development. “This area must be a driver of green open space development, a driver of inclusive social activities, and a centre for policy formulation that improves economic connectivity between regions in South Papua province,” he said.

Third, the Vice President instructed the South Papua Provincial Government to increase collaboration, synergy, and cooperation between ministries/institutions and local governments, and continue to actively ensure that the development preparation stages run well. “All stakeholders, especially indigenous Papuans, must be involved in the preparation of an integrated master plan, sustainable regional design, measurable project management, and cross-sectoral financing for the construction of main facilities and infrastructure centres and other supporting facilities,” said Ma’ruf. The Vice President also advised that the construction of this centre of government facilities and infrastructure will later play a role as ‘a new city’ in South Papua province, as well as displaying the face of the government area that still respects the symbol of local wisdom.

“Let us all work together to realize a Papua’ that is Arisen, Independent, and Prosperous in South Papua,” he said.
