Rimba Kakupi Ambaidiru, MSME Success Story Exporting Papuan Coffee to International Markets

Jakarta – Indonesia is one of the largest coffee producing countries in the world. The Rimba Kakupi Ambaidiru Business Group is among the well-known coffee producers and was established in 1975 in Papua, in Ambaidiru Village, Yapen Islands Regency. Simeon Simara Mora, who is in charge of the group, said that this coffee production has been carried out for generations. In 2020, the Rimba Kakupi Ambaidiru Business Group successfully exported to South Korea and Japan. There are around 200 families managing coffee plantations with a total area of 81.27 hectares.

The group’s coffee production also received assistance from a major bank which provided capital and coaching through a program aimed at empowering MSMEs. According to Simeon, this has allowed 240 farmers, as well as three large farmer groups were more able to face the challenges of coffee processing and collect more profits.

Simeon said that the area in Ambaidiru supports the growth of coffee beans due to its geographical conditions at an altitude of 600-1000 above sea level. Coffee farming supports the local economy, with robusta coffee beans being the mainstay. The development of coffee farming in the region has brought huge profits and made local farmers prosper. “The average turnover we get is around Rp 2 – Rp 5 million per harvest. However, this goes back to the number of harvests and the quality of the coffee produced. If the harvest is good and the amount is large enough, then the turnover that can be obtained will also be good,” said Simeon.

The farmers’ harvest is then processed into pure coffee without any additives. The process of making this coffee powder begins with separating the coffee beans from its outer layer. After ensuring that they are clean, the coffee beans are fermented and dried in the sun until the water content is reduced. The dried coffee beans are then roasted for several hours. After that, the process continues with grinding to produce coffee powder that is ready for packaging. Simeon hopes that Indonesia’s coffee trade will continue to grow and flourish in the international market.
