President Opens Papua Street Carnival: This is the Beginning of Creative Industry in Papua

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the Papua Street Carnival which was held in front of the Papua Governor’s Office, Jayapura City, Friday (7/7/2023). The event featured a fashion show accompanied by music from local Papuan artists. In addition, there was also an exhibition of creative products from the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH).

Looking at the event, the President believes that the creative industry sector in Papua, which is currently divided into six provinces, will develop and be able to drive the economy. “This is the first time the Papua Street Carnival has been held, and I see that the creative industry in Papua has great potential, material, and strength, it just needs to be planned well in advance, well organised, well packaged, well branded, so as to create product that we saw earlier,” he said.

“I think this is the beginning of the emergence of many creative industries in Papua and we hope this will continue,” the President continued. The sustainability of the Papua Street Carnival, which in its first implementation was carried out by the central government, is expected to be immediately taken over by the regional government.

The President thought that the carnival would be much more interesting if it was held in the evening. “We are starting this, the provincial and regency or city governments should quickly take over this because the potential is great. Later I will take one or two groups to show at the palace,” he said. President Joko Widodo has been working in Jayapura, Papua, since Wednesday (5/7/2023) evening. On Thursday (6/7/2023), the President flew to Asmat Regency, South Papua, to inaugurate the Ewer Airport Terminal. Later in the afternoon, the President harvested corn in East Arso District, Keerom Regency.
