Young Papuans Trained as Soccer Coaches

Fifty Papuan from  Jayapura and the neighboring regions received training as future soccer coaches from Uni Papua Football Community (UPFC) and Coaches Across Continents (CAC), based in the US. The training has been conducted on 15-17 September 2016 by instructors from CAC, Gabriel Mark Ibrahim and Calcagni Alicia Marie.

Public Relations Officer from Uni Papua FC, Edward Sitorus revealed that the purposed of the training is to give the right training methods to youngsters from churches, mosques, and other communities in Jayapura as future coaches, including how to train early-childhood children through soccer game simulation and build strong character in children that will uphold peace, friendship and humanity as the main purpose of social soccer.

“Hopefully, through the training from CAC, these future coaches could return to their communities to coach the children through soccer simulation on ways to handle social problems faced by their communities, and will be able to become agents of peace, friendship, and humanity, said Sitorus. Training method directly in the soccer field is being used, to ensure participants understanding easily and apply the method in their communities.

Such training has been conducted every year for the past five years in several regions in Indonesia including Papua, by UPFC and CAC. CAC is a union of coaches across the continent that give social soccer training to the soccer coaches in communities of developing countries, in order to combat the threat of HIV/AIDS and others social problems faced by children in the communities.

Meanwhile, Uni Papua FC is an organization of social football with branches/community all over Indonesia. UPFC now has 34 communities in Indonesia from Jayapura, Sentani, Keerom, Biak, Sorong, Maybrat, Nabire, Mulia Puncak Jaya, Wamena dan Memberamo Tengah, Soe, Lembata, Bali, Salatiga, Landak, Poso, Aceh dan Dumai. Uni Papua FC also has branches outside Indonesia; Philadelphia and Dili. Uni Papua FC’s main purpose is campaigning for peace, friendship and humanity through soccer as a means to national character building.
