From 9 – 14 February 2026, Manokwari, the vibrant capital of West Papua Province, became a hub for scientists, policymakers, Indigenous leaders, and environmental thinkers from across the world. For six days, this corner of eastern Indonesia hosted two high-profile international events that celebrated biodiversity, climate action, and the deep connection between nature and culture.
Together with partners from government, academia, and civil society, West Papua staged the 12th International Flora Malesiana Symposium and the International Nature-Based Climate Solutions Conference, key gatherings under the broader Papua Biology, Culture, and Climate Week 2026.
A Festival of Planet
The Flora Malesiana Symposium is one of the most respected scientific forums for plant biodiversity in the world. It focuses on research, documentation, and conservation of plant species across the Malesian floristic region, an area that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and more.
This year’s edition brought together around 300 participants from at least 16 countries, featuring scientists, researchers, and environmental advocates deeply committed to understanding and protecting Earth’s botanical richness.
West Papua is an especially meaningful host, given its extraordinary biodiversity, home to unique ecosystems like the Arfak Mountains, rich tropical rainforests, and coastlines teeming with life.
“Hosting this event in Manokwari recognizes West Papua’s critical role in global biodiversity science,” said Head of Research and Innovation of West Papua Province, Charlie Danny Heatubun, noting that the region has some of the highest plant diversity on the planet.
Nature-Based Climate Solutions
Alongside the symposium was the International Nature-Based Climate Solutions Conference, an ambitious forum dedicated to tackling climate change through the power of nature, from forests and mangroves to soils, oceans, and traditional land stewardship.
More than theory, the conference emphasized actionable solutions that combine scientific research, Indigenous knowledge, and government policy, a holistic approach grounded in the realities of landscapes like West Papua’s.
One of the strengths of this combined event was its inclusive approach: blending academic discovery with practical policy implications and community voices. Discussions were designed to flow from seminar halls to field sites, with opportunities to explore Arfak Mountains’ forests, Teluk Bintuni’s wetlands, and local cultural landscapes.
Panel sessions ranged from cutting-edge botanical research to climate adaptation strategies, Indigenous land rights, and ecosystem financing, demonstrating how interconnected these issues are. Their recommendations will be compiled and shared with policymakers as West Papua and national decision makers craft future sustainable development plans.
Putting West Papua on the Map
West Papua’s role as host signifies more than logistical success. It marks a shift in how the region is seen, not as a peripheral corner of a vast archipelago, but as a leader in global environmental science, climate action, and biocultural dialogue.
With delegates from countries including the United States, Australia, Netherlands, Brazil, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, India, Japan, and Singapore, international attention was squarely on Manokwari.
Such visibility helps amplify West Papua’s voice on the world stage, adding momentum to global climate negotiations and biodiversity goals. It also sends a message that solutions must be rooted in local knowledge, community engagement, and equitable partnerships.
Looking Ahead
In a world facing environmental crises, West Papua’s role as host reflects both urgency and hope, a reminder that climate action rooted in nature and culture is not just possible, but necessary. For West Papua, and the world watching, the Flora Malesiana Symposium and Nature-Based Climate Solutions Conference were more than events. They were a celebration of biodiversity, a call to action, and a vision of sustainability shaped by those who know the land best.
