Papua Coffee Festival 2025 Draws 38,000 Visitors, Boosts Local Economy

More than 38,000 visitors attended the 8th Papua Coffee Festival in Jayapura over the weekend, held under the theme “From Mountains, Valleys, Coasts to Global Markets.” Organizers say the event has become both a cultural showcase and an economic driver for the region.

Held from September 20 to 22 in Entrop, the festival featured workshops, latte art competitions, panel discussions, and business networking sessions designed to link local coffee producers with domestic and international markets. A total of 62 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and seven coffee farmers participated in the event.

According to data from Bank Indonesia’s Papua office, the festival generated an estimated Rp 1.1 billion in economic activity. Digital payment platforms recorded more than 13.000 transactions valued at approximately Rp 726 million. At the same time, business matchmaking sessions resulted in Letters of Intent worth Rp 11.85 billion.

Papua is known for several premium coffee varieties that have gained international recognition, including Amungme coffee from Timika, Wamena Arabica from the Baliem Valley, and Dogiyai Arabica cultivated in Papua’s highlands. These beans are praised for their distinctive flavor profiles, ranging from floral and fruity notes to rich chocolate undertones, which makes them increasingly sought after by specialty roasters and global buyers.

Local officials hailed the festival as evidence that Papua’s coffee industry is maturing and gaining international attention. While challenges remain, including meeting export quality standards, ensuring fair prices for farmers, and improving sustainability. The event underscored the region’s growing capacity to connect its coffee supply chain to broader markets.

First held in 2018, the Papua Coffee Festival has since grown into an annual platform promoting the region’s unique coffee varieties while supporting small businesses and strengthening collaboration between farmers, government agencies, and industry stakeholders.
