The diversity of flora and fauna in the land of the bird of paradise is certainly beyond doubt; Papua still harbours many species riches that have yet to be identified.
One of the attractions in Fakfak Regency, West Papua, is the yellow butterflies in the Torea area, Pariwari District.
This flock of yellow butterflies usually appears in the morning starting at 06:00 WIT.
They fly in groups and perch on trees and leaves in the Torea area of Fakfak, West Papua.
Their numbers are relatively large and they are very pleasant to look at.
After being identified, it turns out that the yellow butterfly widely known by the people of Fakfak is scientifically named Eurema Hecabe.
“The Yellow Butterfly or Eurema Hecabe (Common Grass Yellow) has characteristics such as the upper wings being lemon yellow,” said the Chairman of the Butterfly Lovers Community in Fakfak, Anggrid Wibisono, to TribunPapuaBarat.com. Friday, (23/5).
According to Anggrid, the appearance of the butterfly species Eurema Hecabe in Fakfak is not an anomaly, but rather due to its habitat in tropical regions.
“Globally, this type of butterfly is found in Africa, Australia, and Oceania.” We in Papua are part of the Pacific region, so Fakfak is indeed one of its distribution areas,” he explained.
He also stated that if there are still butterflies fluttering in an environment, then the quality of the environment in that location is still well-maintained.
“Therefore, the appearance of these butterflies is a good sign and should be enjoyed in nature, because it means our environment is still well-preserved and in good condition,” he said.
On that occasion, he also considered that the appearance of these yellow butterflies could become a potential tourist attraction.
“In the future, if we take care of the environment, these butterflies could become a tourist attraction. People could come to Torea in Fakfak to see this butterfly garden because it happens to be located right by the road,” he explained.
Lastly, they hope that the people of Fakfak will also help protect the butterfly habitat and not disturb their lives in the wild.
