Malagufuk Ecotourism, the Papuan Forest Sanctuary for Various Animals

Malagufuk Ecotourism in Makbon District, Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua Province, offers natural beauty as well as opportunities to observe birds of paradise. However, behind its charm, Malagufuk also serves as a habitat for various types of wild animals, including venomous snakes native to Papua. Data collected by Kompas.com shows that both venomous and non-venomous snakes can be found in the Malagufuk Ecotourism area. This often becomes an interesting experience for visiting tourists. Opyor Jhener Kalami, the caretaker of Malagufuk Ecotourism, explained that all types of snakes in the area are protected and cannot be hunted indiscriminately, including by local residents.

“All animals, including snakes, have been protected by the church, so they cannot be killed indiscriminately.” “Only pigs and deer are allowed to be eaten,” he stated when contacted by Kompas.com on Thursday (15/5/2025).

Opyor acknowledged that Malagufuk Ecotourism houses various types of venomous and non-venomous snakes, most of which are native species of Papua.

International tourists often visit Malagufuk Ecotourism to see the biodiversity, including birds of paradise, butterflies, and snakes. “Many tourists come here.” Most of them are photographers who take videos and photos of birds of paradise and snakes found in Malagufuk,” concluded Opyor. With its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, Malagufuk Ecotourism has become an attractive destination for tourists who want to explore the natural charm of Southwest Papua.
