Southwest Papua has successfully set the MURI (Indonesian Museum of Records) record as the first province in Indonesia to distribute 10,000 Easter eggs to its residents, the most in the world.
The process of handing over the MURI record certificate took place at Nazareth Beach, Sorong, Southwest Papua on Monday (April 21, 2025). The event was part of the 2025 Easter Celebration series.
The MURI certificate was received by the Governor of the Southwest Papua Province, Elisa Kambu, and his deputy, Ahmad Nausrau, Pastor Louis Wayoi, Chairman of PHMJ GKI Sion Malaingkedi, and Paul Finsen Mayor, Member of the DPD RI/MPR RI.
The record handover event was witnessed by thousands of Sorong residents, as well as Sunday school children from various churches throughout the city of Sorong who had previously held an Easter service.
The Governor of Southwest Papua, Elisa Kambu, also appreciated the MURI record-setting achievement. According to Elisa, this is a tangible manifestation of development in Papua.
“We have the same dream and spirit to build Papua and this nation, but our capabilities in the region are limited. “Therefore, I ask for the support of the people in Papua as well as those in Jakarta, to move towards a developed, independent, and prosperous Southwest Papua based on sustainable local content on the land of Papua,” said Elisa.
The progress of Papua indeed depends on the Papuan people themselves. Related to this, Elisa Kambu invited the community to unite and create a safe environment, so that tourists will want to come and the tourism sector can develop.
“We at the West Papua Southwest Provincial Government still have much work to do. “The next challenge is to prepare a healthy, intelligent, and productive generation of young Papuans. This can only be achieved through unity,” he explained.
This MURI record-breaking event is believed to be the beginning of various national events that will be held in the province of Southwest Papua. This event aims to make the province, which was newly formed in 2022, better known to the world.
“From various regions in Indonesia, I am proud because we were able to break the record for distributing 10,000 Easter eggs in Sorong.” “This is the first time in history as a new province,” said Paul.
