Exploring the Hidden Natural Wonder of Papua’s Saltwater Springs in Jayapura

Papua always has endless natural charms to explore. Many beautiful places are still rarely visited, one of which is the salt spring located in Taj Lere, Jayapura, one of two in Papua, with the other located in Intan Jaya. The saltwater spring at Taj Lere, Jayapura, is one of the many hidden wonders worth visiting, as reported by TIMENEWS.co.id from Ancha Bumaks YouTube Channel on 28 September 2024.

Although both produce saltwater, there are unique differences that affect both. In Intan Jaya, the salt water flows from a crevice in the rocks, while in Jayapura, the salt water emerges through a mudflow from the ground.

To reach the salt water springs, the journey starts from the town of Sentani, about 200km away from the springs. If travelling by car, the journey takes approximately 4 hours. Although the road to get there is still in some disrepair, the beautiful scenery and bridges along the way make the journey quite an experience.

After passing through an area of oil palm plantations, we will find our destination. The salt springs at Taj Lere are in the middle of a palm oil plantation, surrounded by young palm trees that are only about a year old. The scenery here is truly beautiful, with a mountain backdrop shrouded in white mist.

The journey from the oil palm plantation to the salt springs takes about an hour, during which we will find mud mixed with salt water gushing from the ground. Apparently, the appearance of this salt spring is thought to be due to the process of Tectonism, because the location is on a fault line.

This spring has been the object of research by several environmental geographers who came to collect data and water samples.

For anyone who comes there, curiosity will definitely be answered when tasting the water. This experience is truly unforgettable. Papua always holds natural wonders that are so mesmerising and challenging to explore.
