Rosaline Rumaseuw is one of them. This Papuan woman from Biak has successfully worked as a fashion designer. Her works are starting to compete internationally as well as being able to prove that in the field of fashion, Indonesia, especially the artists of Papua, is just as good as other countries.

Rosaline Rumaseuw, when interviewed on Saturday (14/9), expressed her appreciation and pride for the organisation of the New York Indonesia Fashion Week (NYIFW) for 6-7 September 2024, where she took part.

The NYIFW event which displayed Indonesian arts and culture was held in Manhattan New York, and attended by many designers, including from Indonesia.

“As the Founder and CEO of. RR, and as a designer from Papua, I am very proud to be directly involved. Because we can showcase not only fashion, but also Indonesian culture, especially from Papua, at the prestigious NYIFW event,” she said.

She noted that through the NYIFW 2024 event, designers are able to develop their creativity and innovation. Not only that, through this moment, they can also show new breakthroughs in the fashion world with a display of cultural and regional carvings to the international arena.

“This event received a lot of praise from fashion observers, culture and art enthusiasts in New York. As a fashion designer involved in this event, I am very proud as a brand ambassador and designer to appear and open NYIFW 2024,” she said.

The opening fashion show featured the designs of Rosaline Rumaseuw from Papua coupled with the work of 15-year-old Indonesian designer from Bandung, Michelle Liu. The third designer to appear came directly from Belgium, Ziana Kaoutar Chaoui.

Rumaseuw also revealed that on that occasion all designers including herself were able to present their own characteristics that were very authentic to Indonesia through the fabrics used, accessories with typical archipelago colours, especially from Papuan culture.

“Like the bracelets used by the male models, the carved karwar statue is likened to a sarak bracelet. Then earrings and necklaces are also from the karwar statue,” said Rumaseuw.

She added that the clothes or clothing on display were displayed by 17 fashion models, including for men’s casual looks.

Where the clothes model displays the beauty of Papuan culture with the concept of the kingdom. The accessories used by the models symbolise royal princesses, whose appearance can look a little different with the use of crowns.

Then for the male model it symbolises mambri or the leaders. Because the clothes or designs used are motifs and ornaments from Papua.

“The theme is the natural beauty of Papua, with the motif of the karwar statue on blue velvet fabric, Tifa and carvings of biaks and starfish and the character of the karwar statue specifically used by 4 male models. The muses are Delonix Tegai and Tamara Rumbekwan,” she said.
