Besides being known as the city of twilight, Kaimana also holds traces of ancient Papuan civilisation through prehistoric paintings. These primitive paintings are found on hard-to-reach karst walls, depicting various forms such as humans, fish and palms.
The paintings are scattered across several small islands in Kaimana waters, such as Maimai, Triton Bay, and Namatota Island. The findings indicate the existence of a civilisation that inhabited the island thousands of years ago.
According to a 2014 report, the paintings date back to the epipalaeolithic period, around 12,000 – 5,000 years BC, proving that human civilisation has long developed in Kaimana.
It’s impossible to visit Kaimana without tasting its culinary delights. There are several authentic foods there, one of which is Kima clam which is similar to Japanese sashimi.
Then, there is also venison satay that tastes savoury and tender when eaten. Both can be topped off with an appetisingly sweet lontar cake.
