Papuan Coffee Notches Rp1.45 Billion in Transactions at World of Coffee Copenhagen

Transactions of Papuan coffee at World of Coffee Copenhagen totalled Rp1.45 billion. World of Coffee, held from 27-29 June 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a business-to-business (B2B) coffee trade show that connects coffee producers with distributors and/or consumers from around the world.

With the theme “Nature Refined, Sustainability Defined”, Indonesia is committed to presenting coffee that applies sustainable practices.

On this occasion, the Representative Office of Bank Indonesia (KPw BI) Papua collaborated with Highland Roastery, which is a member of the Papua Green Gold Producer Cooperative as well as a partner MSME of Bank Indonesia, to showcase the quality and uniqueness of Papuan coffee.

During the 3 (three) days of activities, Papuan coffee received favourable responses and feedback in terms of its flavour and cultivation process.

The distinctive taste is produced from the planting altitude at 1,700 metres above sea level (MDPL), one of the highest coffee planting altitudes in Indonesia, which gives unique and different taste characteristics compared to coffee from other regions.

Furthermore, the cultivation process through the preservation of local wisdom and using the principles of sustainability (the use of organic ingredients) as well as inclusiveness (involving all indigenous peoples in coffee growing areas) has its own appeal in the eyes of potential buyers.

Head of Bank Indonesia Papua Province Representative Office (KPw BI), Faturachman said the high level of interest among potential buyers in Papua coffee was evidenced by the agreement of trade transactions (letter of intent) by 3 (three) potential buyers from Europe and Japan with a potential export volume of 9 tonnes or equivalent to Rp1.45 billion.

“The three potential buyers are Coffee Beyond Borders with a volume of 2 tonnes or worth Rp300 million, Coffee Ontosoroh with a volume of 6 tonnes or worth Rp1 billion; and Stillehavskaffe with a volume of 1 tonne or Rp150 million,” he explained.

The showcasing and business matching of Papuan coffee was also attended by the Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Juda Agung; Indonesian Ambassador to Denmark, Dewi Savitri Wahab; and Danish Ambassador to Indonesia, Sten Frimodt Nielsen; as well as Bank Indonesia officials also attending the Indonesia Investment Forum (IIF) 2024 “Sustainable Investment in Indonesia: The Danish Way” on 27 June 2024.

“The participation of Papua coffee at the World of Coffee event this time is also part of the Road to the Papua Coffee Festival which will be held in August 2024,” he said.

Previously, KPw BI Papua together with the Specialty Coffee Association Indonesia (SCAI) and Rotaryana initiated Sensory Bootcamp activities on 19-21 June 2024 which aimed to improve the insights, competence and technical skills of coffee activists in Papua in producing and serving international standard coffee.

This activity was attended by all provinces in Papua except South Papua, starting from the Provinces of Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, Papua Mountains, and Central Papua.
