Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia expressed his appreciation for the presence of a coffee booth from Papua at the International Coffee Exhibition arena in Melbourne, Australia.
The coffee booth was initiated by a number of coffee farmers from Baliem, Wamena, Papua and Papua Black Gold Coffee. A number of coffees from Indonesia were also promoted in the arena.
“I am proud of Papua Coffee. Later, when you return to Jakarta, come see me,” Bahlil said to the Papuan coffee farmers participating in the exhibition on Sunday (12/05/2024).
The Minister said that currently there are three Papuan coffee brands worldwide, namely Wamena’s Baliem Valley Coffee, Bintang Mountains Coffee, and Amungme Coffee.
Wamena coffee itself is based on the name of its place of production, namely in Wamena which is cultivated in the Baliem Valley which has an altitude of 1,200-1,600 meters below sea level.
Next is Bintang Mountains Coffee which is a type of Arabica coffee grown in Bintang Mountains organically, with the coffee beans harvested manually.
Last is Amungme Coffee whose name is taken from the name of the tribe that manages it, the Amungme Tribe. Amungme coffee itself is cultivated on the slopes of Mount Jayawijaya which has an altitude above 1,200-2,000 meters above sea level.
Bahlil said, the challenge of national coffee is how to downstream coffee so that this commodity can provide added value for coffee farmers.
“The challenge is how to downstream coffee. So that the added value can be enjoyed domestically by the state and farmers. Don’t just have the plantation here (Indonesia),” Bahlil said in a press release received by InfoPublik on Monday (13/5/2024).
Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) itself is the largest annual coffee exhibition in the Asia Pacific region which is attended by coffee industry players and their communities. This year, MICE was attended by more than 15,000 baristas or professionals in the coffee industry to compete their skills in processing coffee.
The Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia visited Melbourne to be a keynote speaker at the Indonesia Australia Business Summit (IABS) 2024.
