Jayapura Unfurls 10 Kilometre Indonesian Flag to Mark Integration of Papua

The Jayapura City Government, Papua, unfurled the national flag along 10.76 kilometers on Hamadi Holtekamp Road, Muara District, Wednesday (1/5/2024).

The presentation of the 10-kilometer Red and White flag is part of commemorating the 61st anniversary of Papua Integration Day. The longest flag presentation on Holtekamp Beach attracted the attention of the people of Jayapura.

Acting Mayor of Jayapura, Frans Pekey said, the unfurling of the Red and White flag was meant to commemorate Papua Integration Day, when it returned to the Republic of Indonesia on May 1, 1963, 61 years ago.

“On May 1, 1963, Papua has joined the Republic of Indonesia, so now we celebrate by presenting the Red and White flag on Hamadi-Holtekamp Road,” he said.

According to Pekey, the presentation of the Red and White flag is a manifestation and commitment to continue to love the Republic of Indonesia.

“For this reason, we invite all communities to always create security and peace so that development progress continues in the city of Jayapura,” he said.

He hopes that the people of Jayapura City will continue to echo the four pillars of nationality in the life of the nation and state.

“So that Indonesia continues to advance and develop in various fields, so hopefully all Papuans will continue to be eager to build Papua,” he said. The presentation of the Red and White flag, as released by Antara, involved around 15 thousand people including Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) within the Jayapura City Government, students from all levels of education, SOEs, and local BUMDs.

“For this reason, we give appreciation to all parties who joined together in unfurling the Red and White flag,” said Pekey.

For this achievement, the Jayapura City Government won an award from the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI).

Marketing Director of MURI, Awan Rahargo, said that Jayapura City managed to beat the previous record of MURI set by the North Konawe Regency Southeast Sulawesi Province. Previously, Konut Regency unfurled the Red and White flag along 7.8 kilometers at Taipa Beach, Lasolo District. “The award given by the Indonesian Record Museum gives appreciation to the city of Jayapura with superlative criteria. Superlatives here have the most meaning, namely by spreading the longest flag not only in Indonesia but MURI will claim this as a world record,” said Awan.
