Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy said that Papua can only be built well by Papuans themselves, and not by outsiders. Efforts in building Papua’s progress must begin with building youth because it is a strategic driver and asset in the development of a region in the future.
This was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister during the “Meeting of Youth Organizations in Papua Province” event at the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH) Building located in Jayapura City, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Muhadjir asserted that local governments must be able to empower Papua’s young generation. Given that there have been many Papuan graduate students who are able to compete with students from other regions on well-known campuses in Indonesia. These resources must be utilized properly to be part of Papua’s development.
“Papua can only be built well by the sons and daughters of Papua themselves, it cannot be outsiders. Take advantage of this magnificent facility as an effort to build creativity and collaboration between Papuan youths,” said Muhadjir.
The construction of the PYCH building reflects the government’s attention to the empowerment and welfare of Papuan youth. The construction of the PYCH is a follow-up to a meeting of Papuan youth and President Joko Widodo at the State Palace in September 2019.
Muhadjir stated, the establishment of the building must be used as well as possible to develop and become a place for ‘development’ of Papuan youth so that they can be equal with young people from other regions.
“It’s a pleasure to be able to visit the Papua Youth Creative Hub Building. It’s very futuristic. I got the activity report just now. There are already many modern facilities that do not necessarily exist in Javanese cities, “said Muhadjir.
As is known, today’s youth have a very strategic value for Indonesia in the demographic bonus period. The percentage of the population with the most youth categories is known to be in the eastern part of Indonesia. Papua Province itself has a number of youth up to 26.83 percent or 931,602 people.
In addition, the Deputy for Coordination for the Quality Improvement of Children, Women and Youth of the Coordinating Ministry for PMK added that the Youth Development Index (IPP) of Papua Province continues to experience a positive growth trend, rising from 52.00 to 57.50 in 2022. This figure is above the National IPP with a value of 55.33. Woro said this positive trend must continue to be improved through massive youth empowerment to become a driving force for progress and welfare of the region.
Also present at the event were Regional Secretary of Papua Province Derek Hegemur, Assistant Deputy for Youth Independence Potential of the Ministry of Youth Tri Winarno, Acting Head of the Papua Provincial Sports and Youth Office Terry Wanena, Chairman of the Papua Youth Creative Hub Simon Tabuni, and representatives of youth organizations in the Papua region.
