Vice President Vows to Strengthen Role of Indigenous Papuan Entrepreneurs

Vice President KH Ma’ruf Amin said the government continues to strengthen the role of indigenous Papuan entrepreneurs, in accelerating the development of community welfare in Papua.

This commitment is also contained in Presidential Regulation Number 17 of 2019 concerning Procurement of Government Goods/Services for the Acceleration of Welfare Development in Papua and West Papua Provinces. One of the goals is to increase the participation of micro and small businesses, especially for business actors in Papua.

“The government will continue to strengthen the participation of indigenous Papuan entrepreneurs,” said Kiai Ma’ruf when receiving leaders of indigenous Papuan business associations at the Papua Governor’s Office, Jayapura City,as quoted on Wednesday (11/10/2023).

Ma’ruf emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration between stakeholders, together with the central and local governments (Pemda) to make the synergy in increasing the contribution of these entrepreneurs successful.

According to him, the central and local governments cannot work alone in accelerating Papua’s development. “For that, cooperation and collaboration with the parties are needed. Large business actors need to synergize with small businesses to benefit each other,” said Kiai Ma’ruf.

On the other hand, Kiai Ma’ruf emphasized the importance of improving the quality and ability of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) actors to be competitive, not only domestically, but also abroad. “MSME players as well as micro and small industries need to continue to learn to increase competitiveness to create global local Papuan commodities,” he said.

Furthermore, said Kiai Ma’ruf, it is necessary to improve the quality of MSME actors. This reminded that in producing professional entrepreneurs, efforts are needed to boost the capacity of association members in various fields.

“Business leaders to increase the capacity of association members in various matters in order to create good and professional Papuan entrepreneurs,” said Kiai Ma’ruf.

Chairman of APINDO (Indonesian Employers’ Association) for the Papuan region Tulus Sianipar expressed his aspiration for the establishment of a training institution for workers in Papua. The effort will aim to improve the skills of Papuan workers.

“We hope that short-term training institutions or institutions for the workforce can be brought back, especially for indigenous Papuan workers,” said Tulus.
