Maritime and Investment Coordinating Minister Reveals Trove of Oil and Gas Discovered in Papua

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has revealed that Indonesia has found a ‘treasure trove’ in Warim, Papua which is in the form of oil and gas (oil and gas) with potential reserves reaching 27 billion barrels.

“We saw yesterday that we found another potential 27 billion crude oil potential in Warim, in Papua,” Luhut said at the opening of the Marine Spatial Planning and Expo Service 2023 at Pullman Jakarta Central Park, Tuesday (19/9/2023).

Luhut said this was proof that Indonesia was very rich in natural resources both on land and sea. Prior to the discovery in Papua, other troves of oil and gas have previously been found in other parts of Indonesia.

“In the sea we have found it in Aceh, in Andaman we found 24 Total Cubic Feet (TCF). In Masela it is also around that much. Is it just that? It’s not,” he said.

The massive oil and gas potential in Warim faces environmental problems because the area is located within Lorentz National Park. Luhut said that his party had coordinated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

With this coordination, the government has agreed to continue exploration by PT Pertamina (Persero) through oblique drilling. “Discussions (with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry) have been initiated, and has been followed up by Pertamina,” he said.

“Pertamina is still working alone. Warim does have a little problem, because it’s a protected forest, but maybe they would like to drill obliquely,” he added.

With its natural wealth, Luhut considered there was no reason for people not to be proud of Indonesia. If everyone can work together, Indonesia is certain to become a developed country.

“We must not think that our country is a not great country. But we must keep in mind that we have strengths and weaknesses, and we have to fix it. This one government will not be able to complete it, so maybe after 3-4 new governments we will reach a point where we are a high-income country or become a developed country,” he said.

Moreover, much of the potential in Indonesia’s maritime resources are not fully optimized yet. “In our seas, there is fish farming that we have not done. Let’s make it more advanced because cultivation and capture in my opinion are not optimal,” he added.
