Vice President to Set Up Office in Papua in September to Accelerate Papuan Development

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin will leave for Papua on September 4, 2023. He will reportedly be based there for several days with the aim of accelerating development in the eastern region of Indonesia.

As reported by Antara, the Vice President will have an office along with the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Minister for Cooperatives, Minister of Public Works and Housing, Minister for Investment, and Commander of the TNI. They also plan to solve a number of problems there.

This was conveyed by the Vice President’s Spokesperson Masduki Baidlowi after accompanying the Vice President in a meeting with Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (PMK) Muhadjir Effendy, at the Vice President Palace Jakarta, Friday (18/8).

“The Coordinating Minister for PMK reported several important things to the Vice President, especially those related to the results of his visit to Papua,” Masduki said.

“It just so happens that the Vice President indeed plans to visit Papua again on September 4 and plans to have an office there with a number of ministers,” he continued.

The plan, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin will visit a number of locations in Papua. Previously, Ma’ruf had also visited Papua and toured a number of cities for a week. During Ma’ruf’s previous visit, Masduki said, a number of problems in Papua had not been resolved. So that during the visit, Ma’ruf will hold a number of important meetings. One of the important meeting agendas that will be held later by Ma’ruf is to listen to the aspirations of the acting governors and regents.

Meanwhile, Velix Wanggai, Deputy of the Vice President’s Secretariat for Government Policy Support and National Insight, said Ma’ruf and officials there would find solutions related to welfare and security in Papua. Ma’ruf Amin is also scheduled to visit Biak regarding sanitation handling and preparation for the Sail Cenderawasih Bay event.

On July 15, 2023, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin inaugurated five strategic projects during his visit to Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province. The five projects that will begin work this year are increasing the capacity of the Haji Bauw-Pahlawan intersection road, the Fajar Roon-Sudjarwo Condronegoro road section, the construction of the 1969 Pepera bridge across Sawaibu Bay, the construction of the Sanggeng modern market and the arrangement of the Borarsi public arena area.

“The acceleration of this development is in the framework of Papua’s special autonomy,” Ma’ruf said as reported by Antara.

The Vice President’s visit to West Papua is one of the implementations of Papua’s development. This effort has been confirmed in the Presidential Regulation on the 2022-2041 Papua Development Acceleration Master Plan (RIPPP). Based on the explanation of the Director General for Human Settlements of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Diana Kusumastuti, the construction of the Sanggeng modern market and the arrangement of the Borarsi public arena area will be carried out for two years until 2024.
