
The Papuan Team Won the Gold Medal at the World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO) held in Seoul, Republic of Korea on 27-29 July 2023 with scientific papers on the ant plant in addition to the grand prize for a new blood sugar level measuring instrument.
Leader of the Papua Bisa Team, Sarah Simanjuntak stated that the first scientific paper concerns ant plants (Sarang Semut). According to her, the ant plants by the Papua Bisa Team under the care of the Terang Papua Foundation produces an extract. The ant plant is an endemic plant species in Papua.
“This plant also has many uses so it needs to be introduced to the people as well as the international community,” she stated before the Acting Governor of West Papua, Paulus Waterpauw. In addition to the ant plant, Sarah Simanjuntak and her four friends won the grand prize for an innovative blood sugar measurement test in the form of a smart watch.
According to Sarah, the smart watch is used to measure a person’s blood sugar level and oxygen saturation without the need for an injection.
This was something that the jury and people of South Korea appreciated,” said Sarah Simanjuntak.
The gold medal victory by the Papua Bisa Team is considered to be an extraordinary achievement.
“This is thanks to God and the hard work we put in for months in addition to the care of Mr. Budi Santoso at the Indonesia Sejahtera Foundation in East Java,” Sarah said.
The Papua Bisa Team claimed the gold medal, prevailing over 27 countries and 1123 WICO participants.
