Sarmi Navy Base in Papua Begins Operations, Expected to Deter Maritime Crime

The class D Sarmi Navy Base is now officially operational, and it is hoped that its presence is able to deter crime in the local maritime area, especially considering the position of Sarmi waters, Papua Province, which is located directly opposite the Pacific Ocean.

Indonesian Third Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Rachmad Jayadi Tr. Han in a statement in Jayapura, Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:19 WIB said the Sarmi Sea is a frequent crossing route for foreign and local ships entering and exiting the area.

“Based on the results of the report, the Sarmi waters area also has a lot of illegal fishing as well as extraction of marine and other natural resources,” he said. “For this reason, the presence of the base will allow the monitoring of entry and exit of goods so that the level of theft vulnerability and security threats at sea which is quite high can be contained,” he said.

According to Rachmad, Sarmi’s existence as a Navy Base has historical evidence due to the relics of World War II that still remain such as cannon ship anchors which are considered icons of the City of Waves (another name for Sarmi Regency) He explained that the Base which is located in Sarmi District, Sarmi Regency, Papua was originally a Naval Post. The base itself is under the control of the Main Navy Base X Jayapura.

“For this reason, the presence of the Sarmi Navy Base is truly necessary to strengthen the defence of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), most of which consist of seas,” he said again. Previously, the inauguration of the Sarmi Navy Base was carried out by Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral by Rachmad Jayadi Tr. Han together with the acting Regent of Sarmi Regency, and the Regional Leaders’ Communications Forum at the Sarmi Navy Base’s Mako field, at the Trans Jayapura-Sarmi, Ebram Village Muara Tor District in Sarmi Regency, Papua, Wednesday (21/06).
