Although rarely seen on screen, it turns out Nowela Mikheila is one of Indonesian musicians who actively compose songs during the pandemic. After releasing the single ‘Tatinggal Di Papua’ (Living in Papua) in May, the 8th season of Indonesian Idol champion recently released a new song titled ‘Kehidupan’ (Life).
Collaborating with several talented young musicians such as Jerricho Escondore, Alam Urbach, and Sun D, Nowela’s latest song genre is an alternative pop. Nuanced with a very deep sense of empathy, the song tells the story of anxiousness about a situation in which someone is shackled by negative thoughts in facing life challenges. The song argues that this anxiety must be alleviated by encouraging and supporting each other.
Listeners will feel unique vibes created from the combination of an acoustic guitar, a distorted sound that echoes firmly in certain parts of the song, and the song lyric composition inspired by the current pandemic situation.
Not only giving a new vibe, Nowela is also certain that her latest song will be an anthem that can represent the feelings of the wider community. In the song-making process, the 32-year-old singer admitted to working on it in several stages, starting with a workshop, making a demo, up to the recording process.
“The process of making the song didn’t take very long, only about two months. I wrote it together with Mas Alam Urbach. Jerricho helped with the musicality, and there was a rap part too, where I was helped by Sun D,” said Nowela.
Aside from making a positive impact through her songs, Nowela and the team involved in the song-making process also took real action in the streets, where they would give out food to the people in need as part of their campaign.
“In the past, when I was asked what dream I had, I always answered that I wanted to be someone who could inspire others,” said Nowela.
This Batak and Papuan singer hopes that the song ‘Kehidupan’ can inspire more people and take part in real actions to embrace, encourage, and support others.
