Making of the Documentary on Marthen Indey, Indonesian National Hero from Papua to Begin

On the heels of the successful performance of the ‘Marthen Indey, My Hero’ Socio Drama in celebration
of the Anniversary of the Indonesian Army on 5 October 2016, The Rey May Arts Studio, Jayapura plan
to make a documentary on Marthen Indey in cooperation with the Regency of Jayapura and Inews TV.

The head of the Regency’s Labour and Transmigration Sosial service (Dinsosnakertrans), Harold Monim
stated in Sentani that the idea came from the Rey May Arts Studio and aims to document the struggle
of Marthen Indey which will be published as a state document.

“That a Papuan played a role in the struggle for Indonesia’s independence,” he said.

The technical side of the documentary will be handled by the Rey May Studio and Inews TV will act as
producer. The funding, which amounts to IDR 400 million for a 30 minute film will come from the
Regional Budget.

According to the Head of the Studio, Jimmy Ondikleuw, the making of the documentary is an honour for
his community, and he hopes for the support of all parties to make the documentary a success.

“The making of the film is proof of the role of the Papuan people in fighting for the independence of
the Unitary State of Indonesia,” he said.

According to the Head of the Rey May Arts Studio, who is also the Head of CPA Hirose (a nature lovers
group), Marshal Suebu, as a national hero, Marthen Indey is an inspirational figure for Papua’s young
generation.

“As a native of Jayapura, I feel proud of Marthen Indey who despite being a policeman of the Dutch
government urged his fellow Papuans to reject the creation of a new, other state and instead join in
saving the Unitary State of Indonesia,” he said.
